On Wednesday, June 17, 2020, Equitable Origin, in collaboration with the Coordinator of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin (COICA) hosted a virtual seminar on "Access to Emergency Funds by Indigenous Peoples: Available Resources and Access Mechanisms".
The COVD-19 pandemic has increased the challenges and vulnerability of the more than 600 indigenous communities living in the Amazon basin.
Several years ago, Ecuador announced to the world that it had recognized the rights of nature in its new Constitution, declaring Mother Nature as a subject of law, which would serve to protect the environment. In practice, this has remained a proclamation, and from the outset, the effective application of this law has been very challenging.
April 2020 Mexico - Equitable Origin and the indigenous organization The Consejo Regional y Popular de Xpujil (CRIPX) signed a Cooperation Agreement to support indigenous rights in Mexico. The partnership will help Equitable Origin implement the Center for Strengthening Indigenous Rights (Resource Hub) which we are developing in partnership with the Coordinadora de las Organizaciones Indígenas de la Cuenca Amazónica (COICA).

Equitable Origin and the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials are delighted to have received replication grant funding from the ISEAL Innovation Fund to continue the development of the FPIC-360° tool for monitoring and verifying Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC.) FPIC is a principle that informs the right to consultation and is enshrined in the United Nations (UN) Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the ILO Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Convention 169. As voluntary standards, we draw upon normative frameworks of international human rights to establish performance targets for companies in a variety of sectors related to natural resource development.
