Canada’s Anti-Greenwashing Bill C-59: Why Partnering with Equitable Origin is a Strategic Move

Canada’s new Bill C-59 is part of a broader global push against greenwashing. The European Union’s Green Claims Directive, approved earlier this year, targets misleading claims and vague language, including the use of “sustainability” and “carbon neutrality”. Similarly, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s upcoming updates to its Green Guides are expected to curb vague or forward-looking environmental claims without measurable targets, implementation plans, or third-party validation. Meanwhile, Japan and South Korea are taking a demand-side approach through their recently launched Coalition for LNG Emissions Abatement toward Net-zero (or CLEAN) initiative, which aims to enhance transparency and verification of emissions data as part of their commitment to reducing methane emissions across global supply chains. This emerging global alignment underscores the growing necessity for transparent, credible, and independent third party verification to substantiate environmental claims, build trust, and demonstrate progress. This shift highlights the importance of organizations like Equitable Origin and the EO100™ certification framework.

Pacific Canbriam Energy reaches new heights in EO100™ Certification

Pacific Canbriam Energy has successfully recertified under the EO100™ Standard for Responsible Energy Development, moving up in scoring from a B to B+. To achieve a B+, companies must score 90% or above across the five principles highlighted above. Pacific Canbriam was the second natural gas producer in North America to obtain certification, which recognizes quality operations relative to global sustainable production standards.

“Achieving this certification is no small feat,” adds Donna Phillips, EVP, Corporate Development. “It requires meeting stringent benchmarks and demonstrating leadership across various performance targets. By successfully navigating this process, we have proven our dedication to exceeding industry expectations and promoting sustainable development. Together with Equitable Origin, we are setting the bar high for the future of energy in Canada.”

Update from the Amazon

With support from UNIFOR, Equitable Origin held a workshop in November in the ancestral Shuar Yayu community in Ecuador's Amazon region. This collaborative gathering focused on giving Indigenous communities tools to strengthen their capacity to defend their territory using the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) framework and FPIC 360° tool developed by Equitable Origin.

Participants from the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazon, the Keñao Association of the Secoya Remolino-Siekopai community, the Shuar Arutam People, and the Shuar Association “Mura Nunka" engaged in hands-on simulations, taking on roles such as community leaders, women’s representatives, and strategic allies to address barriers like knowledge gaps and language differences. The workshop emphasized training youth and community leaders in legal, technical, and conservation skills to confront external threats and promote sustainable alternatives.
