Why is Energy Certification needed?

Energy markets are opaque. Until EO100™ was launched in 2015, there was no incentive for pursuing a higher standard or a widely-credible way to demonstrate leadership and address greenwashing.

EO100™ is the global benchmark for more accountable energy projects. Our certification system offers expert site-level assessment of how energy is being produced or transported, against internationally-recognized environmental and social performance principles and Indigenous rights obligations. Certification against the EO100™ Standard promotes best practices, enhances stakeholder voice, and drives improvement while enabling a premium market for differentiated energy production. Sector-specific supplements cover the natural gas value chain and utility-scale renewables.

“[We] selected EO to pursue responsibly sourced gas certification due to its robustness and independence of the assessment process”
PETRONAS Canada Energy

Built through multi-stakeholder consultation, EO100 synthesizes international standards, multi-stakeholder initiatives, and industry-specific benchmarks for good practice, layering them into an auditable management system framework with the following pillars:

  • Corporate Governance, Transparency & Ethics

  • Human Rights, Social Impact & Community Development

  • Indigenous Peoples’ Rights

  • Fair Labor & Working Conditions

  • Climate Change, Biodiversity & Environment

At the heart of our system is the Operator’s commitment to continual improvement.

“The EO100 Standard is the only certification program for the energy sector that covers the entire ESG spectrum, including community engagement, health and safety, Indigenous rights, and emergency preparedness.”

Find an Assessor

To achieve certification, Energy projects must demonstrate compliance with the EO100™ Standard to an approved expert. Equitable Origin maintains a roster of independent Assessment Bodies that meet our obligations for expertise, training, independence, and conformance to our policies and procedures.

Joint Certification with MiQ

Through our partnership with MiQ, Natural Gas Operators can obtain a dual EO100 / MiQ certification that combines a focus on audited methane and carbon emissions claims with broad environmental, social, and governance assurance, offering:

  • A single audit process

  • Streamlined, comprehensive assurance

  • Lower fees and reduced operational disruption

Demanded by Buyers and Investors

Major utilities, data centers, and industrial energy buyers now seek EO100-certified energy to meet their Scope 3 GHG reduction goals, and water use and other environmental and social performance commitments. Investors trust EO100 alignment with leading disclosure frameworks like TCFD, GRI, and the Equator Principles. EO-certified gas can be transacted via the Fiutur Digital Natural Gas platform and MiQ Registry. Book a meeting with us to learn more.
