Connected Communities
EO’s Connectivity model is simple but powerful: we work with Indigenous communities in biodiverse regions under threat to implement robust, solar-powered connectivity systems using low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite technology. This integrated infrastructure is designed to work far from the electric grid and is paired with a secure, community-managed internet network that allows local leaders to block unwanted sites and protect cultural integrity. Alongside connectivity, we are beginning to provide the technical tools and training for real-time environmental monitoring, giving communities the ability to detect deforestation, illegal activity, or environmental threats as they happen.
What makes our approach unique is how it is delivered. We partner with Indigenous Women’s Craft Associations, such as Kenao. These are trusted, multi-generational organizations that cut across political divisions. The associations take the lead in implementing and managing the networks. Using a “train the trainers” approach, local women and youth learn how to install, operate, and maintain the systems. They become trainers themselves, traveling to other villages to replicate the model. We leverage Indigenous solar installers and tree climbers to undertake installation, maximizing the benefits that remain within the communities. This has created a growing network of over 40 Indigenous technical leaders who share knowledge and support each other through our online peer-learning platform, Territorio Vivo.
