Exciting News: New Funding for Digital Equity

Equitable Origin (EO) is excited to share that our initiative to expand digital equity and connectivity in the Amazon has received critical funding to take our efforts to the next level. Thanks to a generous grant of nearly $300,000 from the Internet Society Foundation’s BOLT Grant Program and with the vital support of global non-profit technology leader TechSoup, we’re scaling our work to support Indigenous communities in Ecuador and Peru.

EO’s CEFO Indigena initiative, “Sianëtsio sikowa’i” (translated as "Amazon Always Connected"), strives to address the significant digital and gender divides faced by Indigenous communities in one of the world’s most biodiverse and underserved regions. Connectivity is more than just access to the Internet—it’s a lifeline to education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and the preservation of rights and cultural heritage. It is fundamental to territorial monitoring and to informed decision-making.

Bill C-59 Guidance – Encouraging News for Certification

Equitable Origin is encouraged by the recent draft guidance for Canada’s Greenwashing Act, known as Bill C-59. The guidelines clarify that an "Internationally-Recognized Methodology," is a standard recognized in two or more countries, including those developed by industry, and does not require that it be recognized by governments of those countries.

This is a very promising development for Operators pursuing EO100™ certification for their assets. The clarification represents a meaningful step forward to enable credible differentiation of energy projects through voluntary standards in the Canadian market. As advocates for credible sustainability standards, EO believes this approach enables innovation and leadership through voluntary initiatives while requiring assurance to reduce misrepresentation.

We look forward to the finalization of this guidance and remain hopeful about its role in setting a strong foundation for green claims and certifications in Canada and beyond.

Conferences

Equitable Origin's Jason Switzer and Viktor Kopic were recently in Houston to attend the Decarb Connect North America conference and Emissions Tracking, Reporting and Compliance Conference, hosted by the Energy Conference Network.

Jason presented on “Scope 3 Emissions and Supply Chain Transparency”, sharing insights on the growth of natural gas certification, and the increasing demand for robust environmental and social performance attribute disclosure. In spite of the US Federal policy swing, drivers remain from downstream gas users including data centers, anti-greenwashing legislation, and disclosure obligations like the EU’s amended CSRD. While uncertainty about ESG and climate policy is high, energy producers and buyers expressed a longer term commitment to decarbonization that, for some, extends 15 years back and far beyond political cycles.

Additionally, EO's, Kaki Comer, recently attended the I-REC Day Mexico in Mexico City. Kaki delivered a presentation on “Market Perspectives: The Future of I-REC Certificates in Mexico”. She observed that as the renewable energy sector expands to meet global climate targets, operators face increasing scrutiny over their broader environmental, social, and governance impacts. Certification programs like the EO100 Standard help to ensure that renewable power projects go beyond carbon reduction, to address issues such as community relations, supply chain transparency, and fair labor practices. With rising investor and stakeholder expectations, certification provides a structured, credible mechanism to de-risk projects, enhance accountability, and drive responsible growth in the sector.
